Interview with Charles Smith, a retired communications technician and community leader, concerning his experiences during the desegregation of the Hamilton Park, Texas, School and integration with the Richardson Independent School District during the 1960s and 1970s. Smith discusses the Hamilton Park Civic League, the conditions at the Hamilton Park School, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and RISD's compliance, the creation of biracial zones, and the role of H.E.W. in the desegregation process. He also talks about student adjustments to desegregation, the role of the Interorganizational Council in the desegregation process, the role of the Hamilton Park Evaluation Committee, clustering plans, and the establishment of Pacesetter.

Retired Justice of the Washington Supreme Court and prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice, Charles Zellender Smith was born on February 23, 1927, in Lakeland, Florida. Son of John R. Smith, Sr., a Cuban immigrant, and Eva Love Smith, he attended school in Franklin, North Carolina at age three, Washington Park School in Lakeland and Hungerford School in Maitland, Florida.
